4 Essential Elements to Living the Abundant Life Jesus Offers.

Jesus began his ministry by calling disciples (learners) to follow him and not simply believers to believe in him. Spiritual vitality and growth are enabled by continuous learning from and following after Jesus - everyone can grow. So what happens when we think of Jesus' call as a one time deal? Zombie mode. In this podcast Tim Hawkinson (Renew Covenant Church, Carroll, IA) & Matt King (Evangelical Covenant Church, Stanton, IA) discuss Jesus' continuous call to follow him and the fruit of making it a habit.

Scripture texts: John 10, Mark 1, James 2.

Often we think of faith as a "personal thing". Isn't my faith my business? While we certainly need to own our convictions and beliefs, following Jesus is less about faith in an idea and more about trust in a person. Putting faith/trust in Jesus places us in community with others - a body - which we call "church". It's a community designed to reflect Jesus in the world and in which we share a common identity, a network of support and accountability to grow.

Scripture texts: John 13, Ephesians 2, 1 Peter 2, Hebrews 10, 12 & 13.

From the earliest age we understand our place and value in society in relation to those around us. Often our self-perception is marred by insecurity and pride which lead us to devalue ourselves and others. We encourage our friends, family members, and children that their uniqueness is a good thing but does it apply to us? Scripture is clear that God's creativity is behind our gift-diversity. Owning that is a key to growth.

Scripture texts: 1 Corinthians 11-12

All people entrust themselves to ideals, beliefs, and people, understanding that they'll be shaped by them. Each of us is a product of the things we allow to mold and make us into their image. For followers of Jesus the call is to allow our interior and exterior lives to be shaped by the person of Jesus - are we taking on his shape?

Scripture texts: Ephesians 3 & 4; Galatians 5

In the podcast Tim referred to how we often want churches to not require much us and simply make the days move easy, a reference to a song (If I Wanted Someone) by this band with thought-provoking lyrics.

The unique network of support we find in the church is also vital for parents who desire to raise children who trust Jesus. In their fantastic book Parenting Beyond Your Capacity, Reggie Joiner & Carey Niewhof explain that a key step parents can make is to "widen the circle" - to increase the number of Christ-following adults who are accessible to your child/teen.
